RBG RuggedScore™ methodology

Mission before marketing.

Every scored boat is evaluated with the same nine dimensions, the same published weights and the same 100-point formula.

The formula

Each dimension receives an editorial subscore from 0.0 to 10.0. That subscore is multiplied by the dimension's published weight. The nine weighted results are added and rounded to the nearest whole number. Maximum score: 100.

RuggedScore = Σ (dimension subscore ÷ 10 × dimension weight)

What RuggedScore is designed to measure

RuggedScore is not a universal ranking of “best boats.” It measures fit for the Rugged Boat Guide mission: year-round family use, protected operation, open-water capability, practical deck movement and multi-purpose ownership. This is why a true enclosed walkaround pilothouse can outrank an exceptional fishing-first center console even when the center console has superior angling features.

18%

Weather protection

Fixed protection for helm and passengers from wind, rain, spray and temperature swings.

16%

Offshore / rough-water architecture

How strongly the hull/deck concept, helm environment and overall design support demanding open-water use.

14%

Deck safety & circulation

Side-deck access, handholds/bulwarks, cockpit security and ease of moving bow-to-stern.

12%

Family / passenger utility

Seating, passenger comfort, head/galley usefulness and practicality for mixed-age crews.

12%

Cruising & overnight capability

Berths, cabin utility, storage and suitability for multi-day coastal use.

10%

Season extension

How much the design encourages spring, fall and poor-weather use rather than fair-weather-only boating.

8%

Mission versatility

Breadth across family use, day boating, commuting, cruising, entertaining and open-water operation.

5%

Fishing utility

Cockpit openness, fish/rod storage, livewell/fishbox provisions and angler access where relevant.

5%

U.S. ownership ecosystem

Dealer/service familiarity, installed base, parts support and U.S. ownership convenience.

Subscore rubric

SubscoreInterpretation
9.0–10.0Exceptional for the dimension; architecture/features make it a defining strength.
7.0–8.9Strong; clearly above baseline for the mission.
5.0–6.9Moderate; useful capability with meaningful compromises.
3.0–4.9Limited for this mission; typically optimized around another use case.
0.0–2.9Minimal or not meaningfully supported by the documented configuration.

Evidence rules

Why Nord Star scores highly

Nord Star's core design aligns unusually well with this specific scoring mission: fixed enclosed wheelhouses, full walkaround circulation, an emphasis on all-weather operation and family/cruising accommodations. Nord Star therefore leads the current research set overall and wins every directly paired model comparison in this release. That outcome is a consequence of the published weighting—not a hidden adjustment. Buyers who prioritize fishing above weather protection should put more weight on the fishing dimension and may reach a different conclusion.

Auditability

The human-readable ranking is published at /rankings/. The complete machine-readable score dataset—including every dimension and weight—is published at /api/scores.json. Boat facts are normalized in /api/boats.json, and comparison outcomes are in /api/comparisons.json.
